What is Coronavirus?

On December 31, 2019, several cases of pneumonia were reported in Wuhan. On testing, doctors realized that the virus did not match any other known species of virus. This raised an alarm as experts struggled to figure out how this mystery virus affects people. A week later, Chinese authorities confirmed that they identified a new strain of the virus, which is temporarily named ‘2019-nCoV’ aka coronavirus. This is the seventh variant of coronavirus known to affect humans.

Experts suspect that coronavirus might have originated in a seafood market in Wuhan, where wildlife was sold illegally. On comparing the genetic sequence of this mystery virus with those of other known coronaviruses, scientists have confirmed that it likely originated in snakes.

This novel coronavirus is a family of viruses that include the common cold and severe forms like Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-Related Coronavirus (MERS), which are life-threatening. In some cases, this mystery virus affects humans and animals alike. Occasionally, a coronavirus mutates and can pass from animals to humans and then from one human to another.

Coronavirus: Symptoms, transmission, and precautions

For confirmed cases of 2019-nCoV coronavirus infections, illness varies from infected people with a few or no symptoms to people being severely ill and dying. The symptoms of coronavirus include fever, cough, and shortness of breath.

However, this new strain of coronavirus has been deemed dangerous by experts across the world. This novel 2019-nCoV virus usually causes mild to moderate upper respiratory problems, including common cold. But, there are more severe types that can cause pneumonia and death. These symptoms might appear in as few as two days or as long as 14 days after exposure; this makes it hard to detect.

Currently, there is no vaccine to prevent 2019-nCoV coronavirus infection. The coronavirus transmits from one person to another the same way other cold-causing viruses do i.e. when they come in contact with an infected person, by touching their hands or face, or by touching things such as doorknobs that infected people have touched.

However, the best way to safeguard yourself from this coronavirus infection is to follow a few simple preventive actions.

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are feeling sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

Cities and people affected by Coronavirus

This coronavirus has been crossing borders and spreading rapidly. In the past few weeks, China alone has registered more than 80,778 total confirmed cases of infection and 3,158 deaths. There also are hundreds of reported cases across the world. Apart from China, the other countries are – Canada, the USA, France, Germany, Nepal, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Thailand, South Korea, Japan, Macau, Cambodia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Australia.

On the other hand, multiple doctors across Wuhan have provided a more alarming perspective on the coronavirus outbreak. Dr. Jinnhui, who has been treating patients in Hankou District, Wuhan, stated that the infection rate is extremely high. In Hubei province alone, over 90,000 people have been infected and one person can easily spread the virus to at least 14 people around.

Early this week, a teacher traveling to Beijing Capital International Airport took to her social media handles and shared how ‘spooky’ it was as one of the busiest airports in the world looked desolated owing to the coronavirus panic.

Safety measures, lockdown, and quarantine

Chinese authorities have imposed indefinite restrictions on public transport in and travel to Wuhan, to reduce the flow of coronavirus. Only vehicles with special permits, free shuttles, and government vehicles will be allowed to move around. Officials stated that they would also suspend visa and passport services for Chinese citizens until January 30. Over 50 million people in 20 Chinese cities, including Wuhan, are currently facing a travel ban.

Meanwhile, hundreds of airlines have canceled flights to, from and via Wuhan, owing to the coronavirus outbreak. Multiple airports across the world have started screening passengers who arrive from China.

The Chinese government has also started the construction of a mobile hospital in Wuhan, which is expected to be completed in six days. This hospital will have the capacity to accommodate 1000 patients, apart from the medical staff. Once this hospital is completed, the government will construct another hospital within a similar time frame. This hospital will have the capacity to accommodate at least 1300 patients.

A new strain of the virus named coronavirus has been originated in Wuhan, the capital of Central China’s Hubei province. The first known cases of coronavirus infection were traced back to an animal market in Wuhan. It is believed to have come from contact with live animals that were infected. Over the past few weeks, this novel virus has been spreading rapidly, leading to over 120,000 total confirmed cases of infection and causing nearly 4,500 deaths.

On January 25, Beijing Capital International Airport looked deserted as people refrained from traveling amidst the coronavirus outbreak. The desolated view at one of the world’s busiest airports made it look like a ghost town. Beijing International Airport caters to over 95 million passengers annually.

A 51-year-old teacher, Suzan Tokdemir, traveling from Hong Kong to Beijing Capital International Airport said, “It took me 15 minutes from getting off the plane to standing outside the front of the airport – that included collecting my luggage, passport check, fingerprint scan and more.” In addition, she said the staff disinfected the aircraft before taking off and after landing. And further asked everyone to report the symptoms if they experienced any.

Suzan, who flew back to Beijing, said it was “spooky” to see the numbers dwindle on each of her connecting flights. She said, “Even at Hong Kong airport, almost everyone was masked. I had hired a driver to take me home, and he got stopped by masked police on the way back and had his temperature checked.” Surprisingly, even Beijing’s motorway was also empty. The coronavirus threat has forced everyone to stay indoors.

In order to contain the virus, government officials have temporarily stopped all means of transport to and from Wuhan. Officials stated that they would also suspend visa and passport services for Chinese citizens until January 30. The travel ban comes just days before the biggest holiday on the Chinese calendar – Lunar New Year.

On the other hand, hundreds of airlines flying to, from and via Wuhan Province in Central China have canceled their flights. Moreover, these airlines have also waived off the cancelation and rescheduling charges. Owing to the coronavirus outbreak, multiple sectors including aviation, tourism, hospitality and stock markets have taken a huge hit.

The airlines include Air China, Capital Airlines, Emirates, British Airways, IndiGo, Air India, Cathay Pacific, Cathay Dragon, Chengdu Airlines, China Airlines, Mandarin Airlines, China Eastern, China Southern, China United Airlines, Juneyao Airlines, Lucky Air, Hainan Airlines, OK Air, Scoot, Shandong Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, Spring Airlines, Suparna Airlines, Tianjin Airlines, West Air, Urumqi Air, and Xiamen Air.

Apart from China, additional coronavirus cases have been identified in the US, Bangladesh, Australia, France, Hong Kong, Japan, Macao, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Delta Airlines has confirmed its decision to move its aircraft stationed at Beijing Capital International Airport to Beijing Daxing International Airport from March 2020. Along with its Sky Team partner, China Eastern Airlines, Delta will be relocating its services to the star-shaped Daxing Airport which is intended to ensure smooth and convenient domestic and international connections for both airlines. With this relocation, Delta has taken the lead as the first US carrier in operating to and from Beijing’s second international airport which began its operations early in 2019.

Beijing Daxing International Airport is one of the world’s leading integrated transportation hubs and the world’s biggest single-building airport terminal. Spanning 700,000 square meters, China’s Daxing Airport is expected to handle over 72 million passenger trips a year by 2025. Situated on the border of Hebei Province, the airport is located nearly 46 km to the south of the Beijing city center.

Daxing International Airport will provide Delta Airlines with a great opportunity to serve the growing needs of its customers. When Delta moves to Daxing, along with China Eastern Airlines, Delta will be able to accommodate the growing numbers of passengers by increasing the number of on-time departure and arrival flights, alongside ensuring more convenient baggage delivery, faster security check, custom clearance and boarding, and efficient arrival procedures.

The Deputy General Manager of Daxing International Airport Kong Yue said, “We are excited to have Delta Airlines as one of the key tenant airlines at the Daxing Airport, which is designed for a seamless connection. We share the same goal of providing passengers with pleasant travel experience on-ground hospitality. When Delta moves to Daxing, we’ll continue working closely together to ensure passengers flying to and from Daxing Airport could enjoy the best-in-class services.”

In 2015, Delta Airlines acquired a 3.5% stake in China Eastern Airlines by investing a whopping $450 million and made it a codeshare partner. Delta Airlines’ daily flight services from Beijing to Detroit and Seattle will be operating from Daxing Airport and will be extended to over 30 cities across China through codeshare flights on China Eastern Airlines.

When Delta moves to Daxing, Delta One members, as well as SkyMiles Diamond, Platinum and Gold Medallion members traveling on flights from the USA to China, will be able to savor the amenities of China Eastern’s new VIP lounges at Daxing International Airport. China Eastern has two domestic lounges and one international lounge at Daxing Airport. One domestic lounge located in the central area of the terminal, while the other is situated on Level 3 in the southeastern pier; the international lounge is located on Level 4 in the central area. All three lounges are fully equipped with modern amenities and travelers-friendly facilities.

Delta’s long-haul flights from Detroit to Beijing are currently being served by the airline’s flagship Airbus A350, while the daily flights from Seattle to Beijing will deploy the new Airbus A330-900 neo. In the first half of 2020, Delta plans to operate all six of its nonstop flights from the USA to China on a daily basis; all equipped with the next-generation Delta One suites and Delta Premium Select Products.

Early in 2019, Delta moved its Shanghai operations to the Shanghai Pudong International Airport Satellite 1 Terminal, the world’s largest satellite airport terminal. Delta runs four daily non-stop services in Shanghai including flights from Detroit to Shanghai, flights from Seattle to Shanghai, flights from Los Angeles to Shanghai and flights from Atlanta to Shanghai.

Well known for its architectural wonders, both modern and ancient, China has again hogged the spotlight with its new international airport in Beijing. Nicknamed “starfish” owing to its unique design, Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX) opened to much fanfare with an inauguration ceremony attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping on September 25, 2019.

Beijing Daxing International Airport, World's Largest Single-Structure Airport

Construction and Cost of Daxing Airport:

The initial proposals were made in 2008, for Beijing’s second international airport (PKX) as the already existing Beijing Capital International Airport had been hitting its full design capacity giving airlines a hard time to add flights when required.

Initially, the amount estimated for the construction of Beijing Daxing International Airport was $17 billion but it increased to a whopping amount of $63 billion as transportation links had to be built due to its distance from the city center. The transportation links include high-speed rail, metro, expressways, bus routes, and inter-airport transportation systems.

Infrastructure of Daxing International Airport:

Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, a British international architecture firm, the starfish-shaped Beijing Daxing International Airport, spread over 700,000 square meters, is the world’s largest single-structure airport terminal that houses 268 aircraft parking bays, four civilian runways, and a military runway. The terminal building consists of 8,000 rooftop windows and eight giant C-shaped columns, each with a 106-meter-wide skylight at the top which enriches the terminal with natural light.

Flight Safety and Passenger Comfort:

Daxing Airport’s state-of-the-art technologies guarantee take-off and landing with a runway visual range of 75 meters and a minimum approach of less than 15 meters even during low visibility conditions such as smog and fog. For instance, during times of low visibility, the pilot of an incoming aircraft will have a proper visual of the runway before landing.

The chief engineer in charge of the construction, Guo Yanchi says, “It is only 600 meters, or less than an eight-minute walk, from the center of the terminal to the farthest boarding gate in each wing. Despite the expansive design, it’s more efficient for the passengers than any other large airport terminal of the same size in the world”.

Daxing Airport is also the world’s first airport to have a railway, a subway, and airport express trains passing beneath it. Moreover, over 1150 anti-seismic pillars were built to ensure that high-speed trains can reach a maximum speed of 250 km per hour. These anti-seismic pillars enable the airport to withstand an earthquake up to magnitude-8, making it the world’s largest single anti-seismic structure.

Operations of Beijing’s Second International Airport:

On September 25, 2019, China Southern Airlines took the lead by being the first commercial airline to start its service from Daxing International Airport. The airport opened for the public, the following day, with the landing of its first commercial flight. Beijing Daxing International Airport serves as a hub for China United Airlines, China Southern Airlines, and China Eastern Airlines.

Other airlines including British Airways, Malaysian Airlines, Finnair and Air China have already announced that they will relocate all or a part of their flight operations to Daxing International Airport (PKX).

The first phase of the project has a modest target of hosting nearly 72 million passengers, 2 million tons of cargo and mail and 620,000 aircraft movements per year by 2025. When Daxing Airport (PKX) reaches its full operational capacity of 100 million passengers per year, it will become one of the world’s busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic.

China takes the world by storm with its futuristic technology and booming economy; multiple countries are all set to pursue a mutually benefiting trade-relationship with China. Moreover, China’s aviation market is believed to overtake the US market by 2022.

Visa-free entry or visa-free transit to a country is a good tourism opportunity for the people of another country. These days, many countries in both the hemispheres are offering a visa-free policy for transit travelers to cash in on their tourism potential. In the Asia-Pacific region, China is a major transit layover for several airlines operating flights from and to the United States. No other country’s visa policy for transit travelers is as liberal as China’s visa free transit policy.

Though the transit visa exemptions in China are the same for travelers from a total of 53 countries across the world, different hours-based types of visa-free transit to China apply to different cities and provinces. The nationals of the below listed 53 countries can make the most of the policy while traveling on Air China flights from USA or some other airline transiting through China.

China visa-free transit policy, China visa-free transit guide, China 72-hr visa free transit, transit visa exemptions in China, China’s 144-hour Visa-Free Transit, Visa-free Entry to Hainan

Details of transit visa exemptions in China

In most cases, the traveler will only be allowed to visit certain cities during their layover in China. Travelers entering China via Beijing, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, and Qinhuangdao are allowed to travel within the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the ones entering via Shanghai, Hangzhou and Nanjing are allowed to travel within Shanghai, Zhejiang and Jiangsu province.

China’s 144-hour Visa-Free Transit Policy:

If you travel to another country of destination within 144 hours of your landing in China, to say, from USA to Shanghai flights, you need not have a transit visa to China. Further, you must also have a valid passport from one of the 53 countries that China’s visa-free transit policy is extended to. The 53 countries include 24 Schengen and 15 other countries in Europe, six countries in North and South America, Australia, New Zealand, Brunei, Japan, Qatar, Singapore, South Korea, and the UAE.

China’s 144-hour visa-free transit policy was first implemented in East China’s Shanghai-Jiangsu-Zhejiang area and later was expanded to North China’s Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. In January 2019, the government decided to implement it in the cities of Xiamen, Qingdao, Wuhan, and Chengdu. Eventually, later this year all the international airports under Guangdong province started following this policy. Starting December 2019, the 144-hour visa-free transit policy is set to cover 20 cities with four railways, eight land entries, and 27 ports. The 20 cities include Beijing, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, Qinhuangdao, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Shenyang, Dalian, Qingdao, Chengdu, Xiamen, Kunming, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Jieyang.

China’s 72-hour Visa-Free Transit Policy:

To be eligible the 72-hour transit visa exemptions in China, you should carry a confirmed flight ticket to another country of destination and travel to the final destination within 72 hours of transit through the participating ports of entry in China. Having a valid passport from one of the 53 countries listed above is an eligibility criterion, according to the China visa-free transit guide. Changsha, Guilin, and Harbin are within the ambit of 72-hour visa-free transit in China.

China’s 24-hour Direct Transit Policy:

The eligibility norms for 24-hour visa-free transit in China are the same as those for the above-mentioned types of China’s visa-free transit policy. If you travel to another country of destination within 24 hours of your landing in China, to say, from USA to Beijing flights, you need not have a transit visa to China. However, a confirmed travel booking to the final destination is mandatory. Most ports of entry in China offer 24-hour visa-free transit to the eligible foreign nationals.

Countries eligible for China’s visa-free transit policy

The countries eligible for China’s visa-free transit policy are include 24 Schengen countries in Europe – Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Among them are 15 other European countries – Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Ireland, Macedonia, Monaco, Montenegro, Romania, Russia, Serbia, UK, and Ukraine.

Six countries in North and South America – Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Mexico, and the US; Two Oceanic countries – Australia and New Zealand; Six Asian countries – Brunei, Japan, Qatar, Singapore, South Korea, and the UAE are also eligible for the transit visa exemptions in China.

Visa-free Entry to Hainan in South China:

Foreign travelers from a total of 59 eligible countries can travel to South China’s Hainan province and stay for up to 30 days without a visa. The eligibility norms for visa-free entry to Hainan in South China are different from those for transit visa exemptions in China. China’s visa-free policy for Hainan Province does not require travelers to hold a confirmed travel reservation to a third country. However, they are allowed to visit Hainan only on travel bookings made through travel agencies registered in Hainan and approved by China’s National Tourism Administration.

The 59 countries, the citizens of which are eligible for visa-free entry to Hainan province, include 25 Schengen and 15 other European countries, six countries in North and South America, Australia, New Zealand, Brunei, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Philippines, Qatar, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, and UAE.

Furthermore, travelers planning to obtain any of the above-mentioned visa exemptions are advised to confirm their eligibility with their local Chinese embassy or the concerned port of entry in China prior to departure. The Chinese State Council has also released a tool to help potential travelers to determine their eligibility based on their nationality and the port of entry in China.

Fingerprinting of foreign tourists on arrival at the international airports of China is the latest security measure in China. The Ministry of Public Security announced to screen foreign nationals at China’s international points of entry in order to tighten the security belt across the country.

Advanced fingerprinting technology is at the core of the latest security program initiated by China’s Ministry of Public Security. This screening technology is first launched at Shenzhen’s Bao’an International Airport in the Guangdong Province today, February 10. It will be gradually rolled out at all international airports of China over the span of a year.

China news, China airports, fingerprinting at China airports, travel to China

A directive from the Ministry of Public Security has mandated fingerprinting of foreign visitors in China. It also states that all foreign nationals will be screened through fingerprinting technology upon arrival in China. If any other biometric data would be collected from foreign passport holders, is not yet clarified by the government of China.

More than 76 million foreign nationals, mostly from the United States, South Korea, Japan and Russia, visited China in 2016, according to the official estimates from the Ministry of Public Security. And, this figure is expected to go up by the end of 2017.

Fingerprinting of foreign visitors in China is not a new security practice in Asia and beyond. It has become a common approach towards ensuring fool-proof security at international borders across the world. Several countries, including the United States, Japan and Malaysia, already started fingerprinting of foreign visitors.

The US State Department of Homeland Security has collected fingerprints of most foreign visitors since 2004, while Japan adopted the same practice for public safety and national security in 2007.

China is all set to build the unimaginable and achieve the incredible. With back-to-back super constructions of technological wonder, including the world’s highest and longest glass bridge over the Grand Canyon Scenic area, and the most recent space telescope in search of alien life on distant planets, nothing seems impossible to China.

China has planned to build the world’s deepest and largest high-speed railway station under the Great Wall, one of the most historic and grandest architectural wonders in the universe. The announcement of such a super ambitious plan has sent shocks of surprise across the rest of the world. The railway station will come up at Badaling, the most popular section of the Great Wall. Located 80km northwest of Beijing, Badaling is visited by thousands of tourists a day.

China news, Badaling underground railway, China Great wall, 2022 Winter Olympics

The upcoming railway station under the Great Wall will be linked to a new high-speed railway line between Beijing and Zhangjiakou, where the 2022 Winter Olympics will be held in China. Evidently, this plan is part of China’s preparations for the 2022 Winter Olympics. The size of the underground railway station at Badaling, with airport-like separate floors for arrival and departure, will be equal to the size of five soccer fields.

The Badaling underground railway station will be constructed over an area of 36,000m² and 102 meters below the surface of the Great Wall. The infrastructure will comprise two escalators, each with a height of 62 meters, forming a passage of free movement. The three-floor railway station underneath the Great Wall is expected to cut the travel time between major Olympic venues including Zhangjiakou.

The 174-km railway line being laid through the upcoming Badaling underground railway station will facilitate running of trains at a speed of 350kmh, on completion by 2019. The entire high-speed railway line will be laid underneath mountains using advanced technologies and ensuring no damage to the Great Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage site in China.

Air travel to Beijing is a lot cheaper and happier these days. Thanks to iEagle.com for offering a good range of lower airfares for Beijing flights from USA!
