The novel coronavirus aka COVID-19 has been wreaking havoc across the world, claiming the lives of nearly 4,500 and over 120,000 confirmed cases of infection. The coronavirus outbreak has taken a toll on the economy of multiple countries, starting with the tourism industry to the airline industry and IT companies to various food chains. This novel virus has also forced millions of tourists to cancel and postpone their flights to China. Moreover, to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus, multiple countries have imposed a travel ban on people arriving from China.

As we all know, the Lion City has been leading the race when it comes to public hygiene, with its strict littering laws that keep its streets clean of unwanted garbage. In current times, Singapore’s hygiene is something that most countries can only dream of. Usually, we hear people criticize Singapore’s strict laws and on the other hand, most praise the country for it.

But, the coronavirus epidemic hasn’t spared one of the world’s cleanest cities either. Singapore currently has a total number of 77 confirmed COVID-19 cases.

Let’s take a look into how Singapore’s Changi Airport is fighting the coronavirus epidemic. Changi Airport Group (CAG), the authority overseeing Changi Airport has taken several measures to ensure that the virus does not spread from person to person.

One of the measures is that the airport has increased the number of hand sanitizers to 1,200 from its usual 160 bottles. These sanitizers have been placed in various locations inside the airport, including high-traffic areas, food, and retail outlets, check-in rows, arrivals, immigration, and departure areas. Don’t be surprised if you find a hand sanitizer at every turn you take inside the airport.

The CAG has also increased the frequency of cleaning and decontaminating the airport premises. The cleaners are provided with specific disinfectants instead of the general-purpose solutions that are used for cleaning floors, countertops, door handles and knobs, and railings.

A unique protective disinfectant coating has been applied on frequently touched surfaces like touchscreens of kiosks and lift buttons, to prevent bacteria and viruses from sticking on to the surface. A CAG spokesman said, “With a single application sprayed onto surfaces, the compound reduces the chance of viruses and bacteria staying on them.”

The CAG has mentioned that they are using disinfectants that have been declared as safe and eco-friendly by the US Environmental Protection Agency. These disinfectants, made of quaternary ammonium chloride usually last for about three to six months. Taking note of restroom floors, latrines, and urinals, the CAG has provided cleaners with ozone-infused water to clean them. Ozone is said to be a better disinfectant when compared to chlorine and other cleaning liquids.

Alongside passengers, the airline crew, visitors and airport staff have also been asked to undergo a screening procedure to ensure that the COVID-19 stays at bay. On the other hand, screening equipment has also been installed at tourist attractions near the airport, like the Canopy Park, Changi Experience studio and Shaw Theatres at Jewel, to screen all the incoming visitors.

The Managing Director for CAG’s Airport Operations Management, Jayson Goh stated that these precautionary measures are intended to increase passengers’ confidence when they travel through Changi Airport. When passengers travel to, from or via Changi Airport, they should be confident that they are in safe hands.

Jayson said, “Changi Airport is an important aviation hub, and therefore it is imperative that we keep it operating safely for our airport community, our staff, for passengers, as well as visitors to the airport.” Most of these precautionary measures were already being followed even before the coronavirus outbreak became an epidemic. Also, Jayson said that they would continue to have these methods in place for the long term, in case, the methods prove to be effective.

Delta Airlines has confirmed its decision to move its aircraft stationed at Beijing Capital International Airport to Beijing Daxing International Airport from March 2020. Along with its Sky Team partner, China Eastern Airlines, Delta will be relocating its services to the star-shaped Daxing Airport which is intended to ensure smooth and convenient domestic and international connections for both airlines. With this relocation, Delta has taken the lead as the first US carrier in operating to and from Beijing’s second international airport which began its operations early in 2019.

Beijing Daxing International Airport is one of the world’s leading integrated transportation hubs and the world’s biggest single-building airport terminal. Spanning 700,000 square meters, China’s Daxing Airport is expected to handle over 72 million passenger trips a year by 2025. Situated on the border of Hebei Province, the airport is located nearly 46 km to the south of the Beijing city center.

Daxing International Airport will provide Delta Airlines with a great opportunity to serve the growing needs of its customers. When Delta moves to Daxing, along with China Eastern Airlines, Delta will be able to accommodate the growing numbers of passengers by increasing the number of on-time departure and arrival flights, alongside ensuring more convenient baggage delivery, faster security check, custom clearance and boarding, and efficient arrival procedures.

The Deputy General Manager of Daxing International Airport Kong Yue said, “We are excited to have Delta Airlines as one of the key tenant airlines at the Daxing Airport, which is designed for a seamless connection. We share the same goal of providing passengers with pleasant travel experience on-ground hospitality. When Delta moves to Daxing, we’ll continue working closely together to ensure passengers flying to and from Daxing Airport could enjoy the best-in-class services.”

In 2015, Delta Airlines acquired a 3.5% stake in China Eastern Airlines by investing a whopping $450 million and made it a codeshare partner. Delta Airlines’ daily flight services from Beijing to Detroit and Seattle will be operating from Daxing Airport and will be extended to over 30 cities across China through codeshare flights on China Eastern Airlines.

When Delta moves to Daxing, Delta One members, as well as SkyMiles Diamond, Platinum and Gold Medallion members traveling on flights from the USA to China, will be able to savor the amenities of China Eastern’s new VIP lounges at Daxing International Airport. China Eastern has two domestic lounges and one international lounge at Daxing Airport. One domestic lounge located in the central area of the terminal, while the other is situated on Level 3 in the southeastern pier; the international lounge is located on Level 4 in the central area. All three lounges are fully equipped with modern amenities and travelers-friendly facilities.

Delta’s long-haul flights from Detroit to Beijing are currently being served by the airline’s flagship Airbus A350, while the daily flights from Seattle to Beijing will deploy the new Airbus A330-900 neo. In the first half of 2020, Delta plans to operate all six of its nonstop flights from the USA to China on a daily basis; all equipped with the next-generation Delta One suites and Delta Premium Select Products.

Early in 2019, Delta moved its Shanghai operations to the Shanghai Pudong International Airport Satellite 1 Terminal, the world’s largest satellite airport terminal. Delta runs four daily non-stop services in Shanghai including flights from Detroit to Shanghai, flights from Seattle to Shanghai, flights from Los Angeles to Shanghai and flights from Atlanta to Shanghai.

Well known for its architectural wonders, both modern and ancient, China has again hogged the spotlight with its new international airport in Beijing. Nicknamed “starfish” owing to its unique design, Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX) opened to much fanfare with an inauguration ceremony attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping on September 25, 2019.

Beijing Daxing International Airport, World's Largest Single-Structure Airport

Construction and Cost of Daxing Airport:

The initial proposals were made in 2008, for Beijing’s second international airport (PKX) as the already existing Beijing Capital International Airport had been hitting its full design capacity giving airlines a hard time to add flights when required.

Initially, the amount estimated for the construction of Beijing Daxing International Airport was $17 billion but it increased to a whopping amount of $63 billion as transportation links had to be built due to its distance from the city center. The transportation links include high-speed rail, metro, expressways, bus routes, and inter-airport transportation systems.

Infrastructure of Daxing International Airport:

Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, a British international architecture firm, the starfish-shaped Beijing Daxing International Airport, spread over 700,000 square meters, is the world’s largest single-structure airport terminal that houses 268 aircraft parking bays, four civilian runways, and a military runway. The terminal building consists of 8,000 rooftop windows and eight giant C-shaped columns, each with a 106-meter-wide skylight at the top which enriches the terminal with natural light.

Flight Safety and Passenger Comfort:

Daxing Airport’s state-of-the-art technologies guarantee take-off and landing with a runway visual range of 75 meters and a minimum approach of less than 15 meters even during low visibility conditions such as smog and fog. For instance, during times of low visibility, the pilot of an incoming aircraft will have a proper visual of the runway before landing.

The chief engineer in charge of the construction, Guo Yanchi says, “It is only 600 meters, or less than an eight-minute walk, from the center of the terminal to the farthest boarding gate in each wing. Despite the expansive design, it’s more efficient for the passengers than any other large airport terminal of the same size in the world”.

Daxing Airport is also the world’s first airport to have a railway, a subway, and airport express trains passing beneath it. Moreover, over 1150 anti-seismic pillars were built to ensure that high-speed trains can reach a maximum speed of 250 km per hour. These anti-seismic pillars enable the airport to withstand an earthquake up to magnitude-8, making it the world’s largest single anti-seismic structure.

Operations of Beijing’s Second International Airport:

On September 25, 2019, China Southern Airlines took the lead by being the first commercial airline to start its service from Daxing International Airport. The airport opened for the public, the following day, with the landing of its first commercial flight. Beijing Daxing International Airport serves as a hub for China United Airlines, China Southern Airlines, and China Eastern Airlines.

Other airlines including British Airways, Malaysian Airlines, Finnair and Air China have already announced that they will relocate all or a part of their flight operations to Daxing International Airport (PKX).

The first phase of the project has a modest target of hosting nearly 72 million passengers, 2 million tons of cargo and mail and 620,000 aircraft movements per year by 2025. When Daxing Airport (PKX) reaches its full operational capacity of 100 million passengers per year, it will become one of the world’s busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic.

China takes the world by storm with its futuristic technology and booming economy; multiple countries are all set to pursue a mutually benefiting trade-relationship with China. Moreover, China’s aviation market is believed to overtake the US market by 2022.
